I am new to this board , bear with me....I have an account that was with Universal Card , it has got sent to collection and they are offering me a settlement. I called them ( I know I should Write) and asked them if we could agree to have them remove the negative history for payment. They said they do not own the loan and therefore they cannot do that. Does that sound right? I am new to this..I called Universal and they said I had to deal with the collection firm, any ideas what my next step could be?

    Thanks

It doesn't matter if they own the account or not...what matters is WHO is listing the "negative" information or this account on your credit reports. It may not even be listed.

You have to pull your reports from all 3 CRA's to see how this item is being reported, and who is reporting it. I would NOT settle, not offer settlement, nor would I even discuss this with them until you know what is on your report.

Once you find this out...the ONLY company (original creditor or CA) that can remove the negative listing, is the provider of that information. So if they listed it, they can remove it (and ONLY they can remove it).

I did look on my report and the only thing showing is the stuff from Universal. But when I called them they were REALLY rude and said I had to deal with the collection company...???????

Sorry I am new at this trying to get an idea where to start...

I had that same problem. One or two creditors not claiming responsibility for the reporting. I had to do a lot of arguing. I had a recent copy of my CR, I gave them dates, names and I even had to send them a copy of my CR stating that they were reporting, not the OC. AFter, my Blood pressure going up a couple of times, they finally deleted. Just keep good records if you are communicating by phone.
