Can you settle old debts with the credit grantor or the collection agency? Say you have an old credit card that was a bad debt of $100. It was years ago so they sent it to a collection agency. Can you write a letter to them and say I will pay the $100 if you agree to remove it all from my credit report? Not just update it paid, but remove it. If you can do this, who should you send the letter too? Should it be to the credit grantor or the collection agency?

First it would be nice to know the date of the chargeoff, the state you are in, and the state they are in.

The collection agency probably. But find out if they are just collecting the debt for the original creditor or did they purchase the debt. If they purchased it, then you might be able to get them to remove the credit info they posted, but if the original creditor has posted and they sold the debt, they probably won't touch it, just to update it show that it has been sold.
