I went to shell yesterday and bought a cappucino and a hostess blueberry loaf. I didn't look closely at the receipt. This morning I logged in to my checking account and they charged me $83.69!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone know the laws that regulate debit cards? I'm so pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm surprised this happenned to you, sirrowan. I re-read your post 5 times, but couldn't understand why it wasn't from GEORGE.
I know they are not regulated like regular credit cards...I would try my banks first, then the actual staiton. They have records of all sales...the cashier probably hit the wrong key. About two months ago I paid my cell phone bill with a debit card and they accidentally pulled it out twice...the bank said they wouldn't help as it was a debit card and I had to wait for AT&T to send me a refund...of course I was broke then so I had to borrow some cash...what a catch 22
In a dispute like this you need to first attempt a resolution directly with the vendor. When you go to your bank they will ask you what you've done to resolve with the vendor.
Do you still have the receipt? I believe, if it is a VISA check card, you are entitled to dispute the charge under the VISA international terms. You go to the merchant first, and try to resolve it with them, then, if it is not resolved, you can dispute in writing with your bank.
I went to the store but the manager won't be in untill tomorrow. I hope my house payment doesn't bounce!
...and next time? Try not to fill the whole tank with Cappuccino. It's a lot more expensive than gasoline.
At my bank, anytime something is charged on my checkcard, I have the option to get the charge reversed, or can put a stop payment, it costs 25.00 dollars just like a chaeck though
Jeez, I just read this. sorry for your loss. I bank with Washington Mutual, and if there is any discrepency, I contact the debit card division and file a complaint against the company. They automatically reverse the charge and investigate. I have to fill out an affidavit, and they contact the company. Did the bank even look at the receipt or ask for a copy faxed to them?
That is why I have more than one account - it dawned on me one day after a rather negative experience - why not do them like I do the credit cards? Always have an alternative. So now I have two banks and a credit union. I can switch in a heartbeat if they treat me bad.
