hi all, any advice would be great! sit back and relax, this is a long one...

about 3 years ago, i moved from one city to another and requested my cell phone provider to change my number to a local number. they told me it would take max 2 business days to change it, and in the meantime, my phone would not work. 3 business days later, still did not work. so i called, and they said something about technical issues, blah blah blah, and said 2 more business days. this went on for 4 weeks! in those 4 weeks, i had 2 flat tires and no cell phone to use in both cases. i called them again, and they gave me yet another lame excuse. FED UP, i just cancelled. however, i told the cell rep i was NOT going to pay the cancellation fee of $199 because they gave me no choice but to cancel. why was i paying for a cell phone if it didn't work? why was i carrying a cell phone if i couldn't use it to call anyone, especially in times of emergency! anyway, so the company bills me the $199, and i call them and tell them i want it waived. they say no and send me another bill, so i write them letters telling them i want it waived. each bill i receive i send another letter. finally, no more bills from them; they went out of business!

well, i thought it was over and done with, but about a year ago (2 years after i cancelled), i received a letter from a collection agency collecting on behalf of the cell phone company. i immediately call them and explain the situation. they tell me to send them a letter of explanation, and they (the CA) will send it back to the cell phone company. i got busy and neglected to send the letter. i haven't heard back from the cell phone company or the collection agency since.

drumroll please.... finally, my question is should i worry? i have checked my credit report as recently as 3 months ago and there is nothing on it regarding the unpaid cancellation fee. this is a matter of principle, not money, and i really don't think i should pay it. but if it's going to come and kick me in the butt, i'll fork out the money and take care of it.

    thanks in advance.

send a DV to the CA

no matter what - do NOT admit this debt is yours. the minute you send a LOE they have proof the debt belongs to you.
