I'm a newbie here so I could really use any help people can give me. I had a FICO of well over 700 (720-740) until just recently when I made a silly mistake that screwed me. I sent my monthly credit payment as usual but made the mistake of putting the folding part in upside down so that the address of the credit card company didn't show. So...a bunch of time passes and one day (about 4 weeks later) I receive a returned envelope containing my payment which was sent weeks ago. In the meantime a 30 day late notice is posted to my credit report...subsequently screwing my FICO score. Does anyone know of any way I can dispute this? I called my credit card company and tried to get them to remove the mark stating that I had never made a late payment on this account before. They were wholly unsympathetic and stated that it would be illegal for them to remove the mark. I'm at my wits end...I am trying to get mortgage now and the best rates which were previously available to me are now...not. Can any one give me some help or suggestions? Thanks.
Some people have luck using the Planetfeedback website. If you have been a long term customer and have a history maybe send a letter to retention? You can always dispute it with the CRA's but since this is so recent there is a chance if you disputed it with the CRA's it could come back verified very easil
I asked them to reverse it but they were not very sympathetic. They basically said that even if they wanted to, they could not unless it was their fault. Since this was an error that wasn't their fault, the payment still was considered late/never received. In fact they said that it would be illegal for them to remove this from my record since it is a valid report.

WOW!!! What CC is this? This really does SUCK. Hopefully you have NOT opened the envelope when the PO sent it back to you. If that's the case, track down a friendly person in the Admin office. (Office of the pres.). Tell her you're sending the UNOPENED envelope to her attention so she can see that IT WAS JUST A STUPID ACCIDENT. Not really your fault either Soulman. If this sorry ass post office was on the ball you'da got it back in a few days not a month. Write a nice letter, send it and the envelope to them and request they reverse the 30late. GL Oh - welcome to the board. .
Have you tried a "Goodwill" letter? Depending on your history with the credit company you can simply send a letter to the company stating that your situation. Be open and honest tell them how you use the card .... but a mistake has been made. (search fro Goodwill letters on this site). I've had some good luck using this technique and having some lates removed. If you only have one late I would think they will work with you. When you send them a letter go up the chain and identify a senior officer to send the letter to ... I would not send it to the collections department or a general billing address. (I sent one letter to the president of a Credit Union and I was helped out by the woman he assigned the issue with). Good luck
Make sure you address the goodwill letter to the president or CEO or something like that. Those letters usually get special attention.
