In the last few months, due to circumstances
beyond my control, I had managed to fall
behind in my ccredit card payments. I always
paid but I was late in doing so and have had
some over-the-limit charges on my credit
cards. This seems to have affected my credit
adversely and I can't obtain any new credit.
Can anyone tell me how long these late
payments remain on my credit record and is
there anything I can do to speed up the
process of removing these late payments.

You need to order copies of your credit report from all three bureaus. Often creditors won't report the first couple times you are late. The proof is in the pudding. Also, it can take a few months for all new info to show up on your report.

Having the report in hand is the only way to look at this issue. Since you ahve been declined, they must furnish one for free.
