I searched and saw some stuff on paid collections but which way do I go with this: Library fine went to collections, $45 balance $83 original balance. It hit my credit report under Unique National Collections. Do I: A: Pay it, then ask the collection agency to validate the debt, then dispute it. B: Negotiate a pay for delete after doing the usual - dispute, debt validation. C: try to get the library to snatch it back from collections via goodwill letter and pay them. Then dispute it
I would personally contact the library first to see what options they can offer you to pay them in full and remove any negative collection marks. If they aren't willing to work with you for some reason, then for such a small amount, just go with B and negotiate a deletion for payment in full with the CA.
I concur with Josh in part and dissent in part. What I mean to say is that paying it for removal is the best option and the right thing to do. However, pay for deletion with a debt collector is hard to obtain and even if you think you've obtained that, they often go back on their Agreement. Still, in theory I agree with Josh here. However, I have a dissenting opinion as to what may better remedy the solution. Rather attempt a pay for delete, you may wish to simply dispute it through the credit reporting agencies. It may well be deleted. If so, then pay the library (or not, that is your perogative).
