Sort of OT about internet payments

My husband has an account with a credit union. The only reason he got this account was because his company will only do direct deposit there. I thought it would be handy. We could just electronically pay our bills out the account. I didn't have time to go sign so I never got on the account.

Now I have had a couple of problems that I just found out about. When I made a payment to my CC in April I couldn't figure out why it didn't work. I didn't really check the balances. I was in a hurry and just paid online without looking at my statement. A couple of days later I noticed that it wasn't posted. I figured it just didn't take so I paid again. My hisband got a call later that day from his CU asking if it was ok to pay it and he said "yes." This month I paid again. Then I went and checked my statement and noticed a weird charge. I called and they said it was the payment from the month before returned and included a returned item charge. This was the first one that I thought got messed up. Well, I just went and checked and it happened again. So my husband's CU is automatically denying this payment and it has now cost me $50 for the 2 months. BTW there is no charge from the CU. They are not notifying us or charging us for returning items and there is plenty of money to cover the payment.

Now I know not to pay from this account but I don't understand how the CU has the right to decide what bills my husband pays. In my opinion he shoould be able to pay anyone's bills. It should be his choice how he spends his money not their's. I am so ticked off that I have to pay the $5o.

Is it in someone else's name? I have never had trouble paying husband's bills from my personal account at WAMU.

This should say "Is it normal not to be able to pay bills that are in someone else's name."

    Sorry

I use Checkfree to pay bills online and (knock wood) haven't had any issue paying mine or my husband's. I just had to have the initial acct. info the first time to set them up correctly.

Are you sure they were set up correctly? What is the Credit Union's explanation for this?

I used to be on Checkfree and now I'm on AmEx Billpayer. Never had any problems paying someone else's bills.

I'd ask the CU what their problem is.

    Here is the problem everybody:
If you're not listed on the account you can't sign checks or authorized payments.

1*The CU is not making that decision
2*He is -Problem is you aren't!
3*It is his choice& The CU isn't making such a choice.
4*Then you should not have attempted to pay with an account where you were not authorized to write checks or make payments.
5*That's because you are authorized to write checks from that account.
6* Who's name the bills are in have nothing to do with it, however who's name
is or is not on the checking account has everything to do with it.

My husband knew that I was submitting the electroninc payment. Like I said in my post the CU called him one time and he told them to pay it. They have no idea who is authorizing the payments. It's not like I am sneaking behind his back. He knows that all of our bills get paid electronically out of his account. It just so happens that this bill is in my name so the CU decided to they don't have to pay it.

A bank or a CR will not pay checks written by anyone who is not listed as an account holder.
Hooray for the CU being on their toes on this one.At least they didn't do like my credit union did with me and pay on 3 photo copied checks.Wish mine had been this alert!

1* That's all well and good but the CU didn't know it.
2 You out to be thankful you have a CU that is so alert and on their toes. Had mine been like yours my CU would not have paid sprint for 3 photo copied checks.
3* Well then I don't blame them for taking the precautions they took.
4* But the CU is the one who really needs to know it.
5* Nope they were only exercising caution and protecting his account.I would not want it any other way if it were my account.

All the above aside to prevent such future problems such as you encountered I strongly suggest you get your self listed on the checking account.

I just haven't had a chance to go over. The CU is pretty far away from where we live and where my husband works so to get me signed up would require him to take time off work.

This should not be an issue. When the CU recieved request for the payment it appeared to them as though my husband set it up. I did not sign his check or request the payment in my name. Why shouldn't he be able to pay his mother's cousin's dog's bill? He should choose where his money goes. If they have a concern they could have called but to deny it was wrong.

    Exactly.

The issue is not with who made the payment, as the payment was made online and everybody and their brother could have authorized it if they had access to his online bill payer service.

The issue is why did the CU refuse to pay? For all purposes, they received a payment order from the owner of the account.

What difference would it make to the CU whose bills he has decided to pay?

And if there was a problem with the payment (other than NSF), why didn't the CU call or email?

Yep, in the end it was determined to be the credit card issuer's fault. It was a credit union and they were having problems with payments from CU's. They reversed all the fees and posted the payments.

    Thanks, Kim
