Store says NO inquiry but pulls it anyway I have a friend who got a pre-approval in the mail from a furniture company. She is thinking of buying a car so, she didn't want to apply for the furniture... thinking they would pull her credit report. We went out of state b/c I was looking for furniture... While in the store she told the guy she was pre-approved but didn't want a Hard inquiry... The guy spoke up and told her....THAT.. if she had the pre-approval card and her ID that they only pulled a SOFT not a HARD. Well..... she didn't do anything that day.. she waited two weeks later then went to a store near her home. She then asked them the same question... They BOTH told her NO.... they didn't pull hard inquiries. They ONLY asked that she have her pre-approval and ID... IF she didn't have that then they would HAVE to pull her CR. (this was the sales rep ANd a they lady who processed everything said). Ok.. she picks out what she wants puts down a down payment then leaves. The next day she gets an e-mail for guess who... YES... Credit expert saying that they pulled her CR. Now... tell me.... What should she do..! She has contacted Household.. and they gave her an address to write to. She also contacted the Furniture store... they pretty much told her she was &hit out of luck. I and she really feels that she is STUCK with this inquiry (b/c none of them wanted to help)! Is there anything she can do about this legally? I can tell you that she did have to sign the pre-approval letter (which states you are allowing them to pull a CR) HOWEVER.... the company is giving false information! What should she do???
Re: Store says NO inquiry but pulls it anyway For starters, if the furniture hasn't been delivered yet, I would tell them I am cancelling the order unless they remove that inquiry.
Re: Store says NO inquiry but pulls it anyway Wow. I'm not sure on the legalities of the issue, but since she signed the standard app forms that say they are allowed to pull a CR, I doubt there's much of a leg to stand on. Salesman love to tell you what you want to hear; he may not even know the difference between a hard & soft inq. Things like this are so easy to "pull over" on the average consumer who does not understand their CR. Personally, I'd climb the chain of command. What store was it? It's a long drive, but you & your friend may want to have words with the manager, then the district manager. If nothing else, you may walk away with a discount on the furniture already purchased. As for the inquiry, I bet that's there to stay. They have you signing the documents, and it's Household--in my dealings, Household is not on the side of the consumer. As for the salesman, he's a jerk for misleading people, possibly you can help his superiors can get the message through to him. Good luck!
Re: Store says NO inquiry but pulls it anyway ALL YOU CAN DO IS CANCEL THE ORDER...I hope it was $3,000+ "I WAS TOLD, I WOULD HAVE A "SOFT" OR NONE AT ALL...A "HARD" WAS PULLED, SO I HAVE NO RECOURSE BUT TO CANCEL THE ORDER" On the bright side, they say the "HARD" only hurts for 6 months...
