H.R. 2036 - Social Security Number Privacy and

Identity Theft Prevention Act of 2001

â??The occurrence of identity fraud against U.S. consumers has increased dramatically in recent years. Identity theft is considered the fastest growing
financial crime in the country, affecting an estimated 500,000-700,000 people annually. Allegations received by the Social Security Administrationâ??s
Hotline involving potential fraudulent use of Social Security numbers for identity theft increased from 62,000 cases in fiscal year 1999 to over 90,000 in
fiscal year 2000 â?? almost a 50 percent increase in just one year."
--- Congressman Clay Shaw at the introduction of H.R. 2036 (May 25, 2001)

While I agree SS#'s should not be used for common identification, can you imagine how screwed up our credit reports (or more screwed in many cases) will be if the CR's are forced to stop using them?

They can't even get a simple change of address correct most of the time!!!

    Actually I disagree here,

Social Security is related and it is that combination of relationships that pull all of one persons data into a credit report.

Even with the SS# at this time, we still have problems of mixed files, mixed data.

Because the SS# is not the key factor relating all information in the files, it can't be (so there is the problem) they legally can't make this key identification.

If we had individual ID# then, they could finally make a key factor for files (legally), thus eliminating the mixed data problem we have now!

I really think this would be a great step to helping consumers if and once this is done, it would be a step in the right direction at least.
