Anyone have a servicer they would recommend for Stafford loans? I have had somewhat bad luck with Sallie Mae, Suntech and Citibank. I have never defaulted or been late. I have just had problems with in-school deferrments and such.

Any recommendations of places I should avoid, or servicers that are really good?

I recommend consolidating through the william d ford direct loan program. They ARE the dept of education and KNOW the laws. I have had NO problems at all.

Actually, I am asking because I need to take an additional loan out for the upcoming school year. I am trying to pick which lender.

Unfortunately, my school does not participate in the direct loan program (the William D Ford program), so I can't get one of those. That also means when I consolidate later, I can't go that route either. It's a real bummer because they have some great interest rate reductions on their consolidation loan.

You may want to try Bank One. www.educationone.com Thats who I got my loan thru. They send the check to you and not the school.

Just a warning....when I was in law school all of our loans got bought by Sallie Mae. I and about 10 of my friends got notices in the same week that Sallie Mae had bought our loans. The only reason why I mention this is that you may end up with Sallie Mae anyway.
