I am filing suit against The State of Maryland Central Collection Unit. Here is my question. Someone on this board said some time ago that I can file in New York since this is where I live. However, after reading the small claims court guidelines, it seems that I have to file in the State of Maryland since that is where they do business and it is a government entitiy. This is hard and I am quickly becoming discouraged. It would be a hardship for me to travel out to Maryland for a case that I may or may not win. Not because I don't have sufficient evidence but because Maryland is a very politically motivated state and very much a good ole boys network. I just don't think a judge will rule in my favor against the state's central collection unit. So for all of these reasons I think that it is better that I file here in New York but I am not sure what my rights are regarding this. Please advise.

Robin, as long as they have an office in NY, you can sue them. THey have to have an office in the county you live in or you have to travel to the county where it is.

I used to live in NY, and thought about suing a creditor and repo company, but since they illegally repoed my car, I couldn't get to Massachusetts or Syracuse. Fortunately just threatening to sue made them return my money.

    Good luck!
