How long do a creditor have to send a debt to collections? Because I have a debt that was going into it's seventh year and a month or two before the seventh year they sent it to collections and now it's on there for another four years. Can i get this off my report?

    Thank you

They don't need to send it to a CA ever.

When was the last payment made on the debt?

That date generally sets the SOL, based on your state's laws.

When did the debt first go delinquent, after which it was never brought current?

That date sets the starting point for the 7 year reporting period on credit reports.

Sending a debt to a CA does not extend the reporting period, not for 4 years, and not at all.

I asked them to show me when it was reported and they have not. On my report everything shows the report date except that one because i know seven years are up. I think they are trying to scam me. I remember from a previous report from years ago that it was reported in 1997 or 1998.

    what can I do?

Dispute thru the CRA as "obsolete-reporting after 7 years". If the CA verifies, providing a more recent date, you can then sue. The CA is required to provide the original date of delinquency to the CRA within 90 days of posting their TL on your CR.
