Stopping hard inquiries?

I recently pulled my credit report and there's a mile long list of those who have inquired about my CR in the past 6 months. Some of them I knew about, but others I don't know why they'd even be looking.

    1) Is there any way to find out why they're looking?

    2) How bad does it hurt my score when they look?

    3) Can I get them to stop?

    Thanks -

Do you owe them money? Do you have open accounts with them? Or do you not even recognize the company?

    1) Is there any way to find out why they're looking?
    yes

    2) How bad does it hurt my score when they look?
    it varies.
    3) Can I get them to stop?
if they have a permissable purpose, probably not.
    Need more details.

My credit union insists that my having a checking and savings account with them constitutes an account which gives them a PP to pull softs (lately its been every month). Go figure.

Most likley those are for the most part simply promotional reviews and most of them are not viewable by companies to whom you apply for credit. They are used by CC marketing departments in order to send you all of those "pre-approved for..." credit card offers.

If you want the majority of these soft inquiries to stop, you will need to opt out of the CRA ability to "market" your information! Take a moment and visit this link from Experians website: http://www.experian.com/privacy/opting_out.html

If you elect to call the telephone number, be aware that their is both a 2-year and lifetime (permanent) opt-out option - select the later option and you should never have to bother with this again. On the other hand, if you opt out, all those wonderful 0% balance transfer option offers will stop filling your mail box!
