Strange Letter from Household

Household Finance has been listed several times on our BK, supposedly holds a 3rd lien on our property that is being foreclosed on (we want to sue over this if we can find a lawyer who will even call back) and in general have been A*******.

When I went to a car dealer in July, unbeknownst to me they used Household Automotive. Of course, if I knew this in advance I would tell them don't bother, we will never, ever do business with that company again.

Two days ago we get this letter in the mail from Household Finance and Its Subsidiaries saying "we are not able to make the loan you requested because you do not meet our minumum requirements for credit extension". It then goes on to say "if a credit report was pulled, it was from:" No credit bureau is listed. The letter was sent to our old address, the one being foreclosed on.

Now, if the loan is the auto one they are talking about, they did pull hard inquiries. It was also approved, as the dealer wanted to draw up a sales contract for a car. In that case the CRs with the inquiries should have been listed as per the wording of this letter. If it is not the auto loan, we did not nor would we apply for a loan from this IMO horrendous lender. Hubby called and they wanted his SS#--he refused to give it. We never give out our SS# on anything we didn't initiate.

I can't help but think that Household is 1) trying in some odd way to mess us up or 2) trying to cover their tracks in pulling my husband's credit, which was done without his approval and is in dispute with the CR's.

This is a strange letter indeed. We have clashed with HFC a number of times, caught them in lies etc. If someone has any thoughts on this strange letter, please post. On another board someone suggested we write and ask for a copy of the application, which we will do. But any other input would be appreciated. I think they are up to something or trying to protect themselves. I know a LOT about them and what they do and nothing would surprise me.

    Thanks in advance.

i applied for a best buy card a year ago. also they let you apply for a hbcard at the same time. i said thats fine because i didnt know hb was bad as id had an orchard bank card for a while with no problems(no cl increases either.) they pulled a seperate inquiry anyway and the associate told me there i was denied for both. a week later i got the hbcard in the mail...after being denied? of course i then called them and told them i didnt want there $80 a year annual fee or 22% or whatever it was interest with a $49 startup fee. i didnt have any card that bad even when i first started getting credit. it ended up on my credit report for a 1 month positive tl even though i never activated it either. thats just proof that THEY JUST DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

Your story does not suprise me in the least. It is indicative of what I believe is one of several sneaky ways this company does business. My opinion but I've heard so many stories of various shady techniques where folks ended up getting hurt badly credit-wise that NOTHING would surprise me.

Oddly enough, although it seems the opposite, they know exactly what they are doing. You are credit savvy, but a lot of consumers are not, and that is what they bank on. First, people must realize that any dealings with Best Buy are really dealings with Household. Once Best Buy gets your information (a reason why you must always mail in for rebates instead of just getting the sale price at the store) it is passed over to Household. This will set off a number of various scenarios, all designed to pull the unwary into Household's clutches.

When we received that fateful loan from them, we were told it came with a $2500 limit credit card. Nowhere in printing is this mentioned, nor did we need or desire it. Sales rep skillfully did not mention interest rate, yearly fees etc. Back then, pre-internet, we didn't know to ask and stupidly accepted it but didn't use it. After about a year, we received a string of letters mentioning that they noticed we weren't using the card and gave a whole bunch of reasons why their card was so great (not). The company will just not stop.

The letter we received might have been just a ploy to get us to call in about a loan we never applied for. Their wanting the SS# even though there is an application # on the letter now leads me to think this is another one of their trolling methods. If so, this local office is blissfully unaware that they may possibly be violating the BK discharge which does not allow for such soliciting by a company that was included in the BK. I'm just foaming at the mouth waiting for them to produce an application from us for credit.

Thanks for your very interesting reply. Another story of the bottom feeding methods that are employed to lure consumers. Congrats on your ability to deal with them appropriately and not end up becoming ensnared in the net.
