I just thought of this question... normally Student Loans are not dischargeable in Bankruptcy Ch7, HOWEVER, if the creditor were to reduce these loans to judgement, couldn't the judgement be discharged in BK?? I know this is probably a legal question that a lawyer could answer, but it is interesting and might give you some bargaining power... "Work out a reasonable repayment plan with me and get all that you are owed or get a judgement and I will go BK and you get none of what you are owed"
