I was contacted by a collection agency about a defaulted student loan.
I thought I had paid all my student loans way back in 95.
So i wrote to the agency asking them to verify that this loan was not paid
(I have no records -lost everything in a move)
I sent a letter with a return receipt.
I haven't heard back from them at all- its been a month.
    Now what do I do.
I'm afraid they make seek a judgement without contacting me again.
I really am willing to if I didn't pay this loan, but arghhhhh!!!!!!!
Should I contact them? I know student loans never go away.
    any advice out there?

Send another letter (certified) with the first letter attached with the proof (copies on all)of delivery.
Be much more firm and look for posts from the king of letters and all that is official looking--Lizardking!

Call 1-800-4FEDAID and ask for the current status of all your
student loans and the servicer currently holding your student
    loans.

If there is a student loan ion default, rehabilitate it. If there isn't
a student loan in default, then use the FDCA and the resources
at the Student Loan Ombudsman dept. to get the collection
agency to leave you alone. If they continue, you can sue them
    for easy money.

also the National Student Loan Database will list all your federal guaranteed
loans (based on disbursement) for you. But you have to have a PIN assigned
to you by the DOE in order to access your records.

Marci, you took the words right out of my mouth.

    Pt Barnum,
The people at 18004fedaid and at the Dept of Ed directly thru the Ombudsman's office can look that up for you. If you continue to run into problems contact the Dept of education Ombudsman's office..(link below).

BTW: who was the agency. I was contacted by an agency that my loans were in default and I had paid them thru consolidation 1 year ago. They were either lying or purchases old defaults and hoping to make a buck, using very old records of course. The agency was General Revenue and they put an inquiry on my credit file. UGH!

    Good Luck!
