I consolidated all my student loans (or so I thought) with the Department of Ed through a Direct Loan 2 years ago. I recently have received a letter from a guarntee agency stating that I have an outstanding debt of 4,000 dollars, and they put a collection agency called DCS on my trail. I asked them to send me the promissory notes, and when they did, I noticed that the note did include a loan that I had signed for 15 years ago. However, I had withdrawn that particular semester before the deadline at my university, and so my student loan was cancelled. (or so I thought) I wrote a letter to the guarntee agency, and they told me they would do an investigation and get back to me. Their response was that the university didn't keep records after 7 years, and that the loan must have been sent directly to me, so therefore I owe the balance. This is ridiculous. I know the University did not send me a 3000 check after I withdrew for the semester. I have contacted the Federal Ombudsman to investigate the loan in question. Any advice on anything else I can do to keep the collection agency off my back? They have called my family, neighbors, etc. pretending to be "an old friend" who is looking for me.
