I thought I'd ask this here since so many of you have dealt with student loans. Thanks in advance! As an undergrad, I've accumulated about $4700 in Federal Subsidized loans and a $893 Perkins Loan direct from my school. I just graduated a few weeks ago and am attending graduate school in August. Am I to assume that because I'll be enrolled fulltime in the fall that I do have to repay my loans yet? What about my Perkins Loan from my school? Is writing them and telling them I'm enrolled fulltime in graduate school enough to not have to pay it back right now? Thanks again.
You will not have to make payments on them as long as you are enrolled in school at least 1/2 time. You can send them verification of enrollment.
agreed. BUT don't assume they will just know. You need to complete a request for deferment based on school attendance and they will provide a verification o f enrollment your school must complete. Keep copies of everything and insist they notify you in writing once your loan is deferred.
What typically happens is that there is a clearinghouse and when your SSN comes through as being enrolled in school, they'll notify you. However, when I went back to school, I called my lender and told them, then faxed my school information. Later, they did receive the information from my school that I was enrolled.
Yes, full time students do not have to pay. Most good student aid departments will do all the notification for you. Just make sure that you address information is correct with everyone and IF you get any paperwork suggesting it's time to start payments be ready with supporting documents showing you are a full time student. Good luck and Good grades!
