I sent a GW letter to Nelnet in Feb. 7. They received it Feb 11 and DENIED my request Feb. 14. Before I found out about the denial, I called them to follow up. They told me it was denied and they can't do anything about it. I told them the reason I put in my GW letter but they wouldn't budge. I called them again today and talked to a nice rep. She told me that my request was denied and she can't do anything about it. Again, I told the same story and asked if she could talk to a supervisor. She put me on hold and when she came back she said the supervisor will ask for the negative notations on my 6 loans to be REMOVED. It has to go through approval process though. I know. Do I have it in writing? No, I do not. I talked to the rep. for about 30 minutes and I think she was ready to get off the phone with me. I was that persistant. I asked her if she could fax me that information but she said that would be asking too much for now. She suggested that I call back and follow up on it 'coz it might take a while. I was just really happy to hear the good news that I did not want to push my luck. I will call again at the end of next week to follow up and ask for a written confirmation. Be persistent BUT nice. They'll get tired of you eventually and give you what you want. =)
I have been told that a request for deletions or retractions of negative notations on my accounts have been sent to the credit bureaus. I am expecting a letter from Nelnet stating the above within the next couple of days. THANK YOU CREDITNETTERS!
Here's the letter I received today from Nelnet: Dear <GC>, In response to your recent inquiry received by Nelnet Corporation regarding your Federal Family Education Loan Program(s), please be advised of the following information: Nelnet has issued credit retraction on your student loan accounts. Please allow four to six weeks for the information to reach the credit bureaus. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service to you. To view the account information, please visit our web page at www.nelnet.net . You may also contact our customer service Department at 888-486-4722 Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM EST. Sincerely, Customer Service Department ---------------------------------------------------- I was told that the information was sent to the CRA's on March 4. Does it really take 4 to 6 weeks for this information to show up on the credit reports? Either way I'm happy. Another question I have is that can I send this to the CRAs to delete the negative information faster or I need another document? I have never seen a UDF and I am not sure if this will work or not. Thanks!
Congratulations! I'm glad to hear someone has been successful. I wrote a GW letter last week, and faxed it to them. I just got my first rejection letter from Nelnet, and they recommended I submit a dispute with the CRAs, weird. I had initially called asking to have lates removed, and they said no. I will try the call again with an escalation to a supervisor. Hopefully, I will be as lucky as you were. I initially got screwed when I was enrolled half time in two correspondence courses (6 credit hours) which I was told was sufficient to defer my loans. Then I started getting notices that I needed to start paying on my loans. NelNet said they couldn't count correspondence enrollment until the courses were complete (oh goody, retroactive deferral). And this whole time they were reporting me as late. I filed for a forbearance in the end because I got tired of arguing, but they STILL won't take the lates off. If my next round of calls fail, I think I shall file a dispute with CRAs indicating I was enrolled half time at the time of the 'late payments', I don't think I should have been asked for in the first place.
You HAVE to talk to a supervisor. I've always been told NO by a customer rep. but when my request reached a supervisor, it was accepted right away! I have been paying on time since my lates which was 3 years ago. How long ago since you had your late payments? But keep trying. I told them that I did not want to dispute the lates with the CRA because it is true that I did not make the payments and I was late BUT ____________________ <reason why>. Good luck! But if you dispute with the CRA, you might want to start as "never late" (simple) and if that does not work, dispute for another reason.
