Switch AMEX gold to Blue w/o Inq

Got an offer in the mail to add Blue (6.9 fixed apr) to my gold. I called last night to cancel my gold and switch to Blue since both cards have the same MR Points, except for the Airline miles with blue. I want to cancel the Gold b/c I see no point in paying the $130 fee when I am only spending about $500-$700 a month on the card and I am not traveling alot anymore. The rep said that reg blue would be better for me the Blue Cash b/c of my spending level and the tiers for the cashback card. So, I thought I would be able to switch cards since they were already offering me Blue. However, they would have to pull a hard inq. I could not believe it. No way I was going for that. I thought someone had success with swithing from gold to another card. So, I politely told him to cancel the card. He put me on hold for about 5 minutes then brings another rep to close the card; she informs me that I would lose the MR points that I have. So, I am holding off closing the card until I use the points.

So, enough of my venting; what rebate cards do you all have and like? One that gives 1% without tiers (I have Discover and I am not that impressed with it). I have been checking out the Chase Stockback card; any comments about it? Rates does not matter as I will be using the card for daily purchases and paying it off every month. Also, any suggestions on reward cards from MBNA or Universal/Citi? I already have these cards and would consider switching to another product of theirs to avoid a hard inq.

    Thanks for your help,
    Willis

I used my MR points on a DVD player and cancelled the card last night. THey still offered Blue but could not guarantee that a hard would not be pulled. They also offered to let me go down to the $90 gold card and assured that no hard would be pulled. Double no because they assured me no hard would be pulled (because no application is being taken) when I stepped up to the $130 card and low and behold they pulled a hard. However, I do have a year to re-open the card if I like; I may do this if I start traveling more.

Does anyone have input on rebate cards from Citi/universal or MBNA?

hey willis - they pull a hard when you try to get a revolving credit line vs. Charge.

I have never seen ANY POST allowing someone to go from CHARGE to credit card without a full application.

FYI - your charge card is from Travel Related Services - credit cards are issued thru Centurion Bank - a totally separate entity.

hope this helps - and if you have good scores and want Blue - apply and go for it.

    good luck - dogman

    Willis,

I regularly use Citi Dividend PS card for all purchases where Amex is not accepted. You get 1% on everything.

The only drawback is you only get the rebate when the amount totals $100.00 ($10,000.00 in charges).

Personally I like it that way because when the check comes you can do something nice with it (dinner with spouse?) rather than getting small annual checks or, worse yet, credits on your statement towards next months' purchases.

    Hope this helsps.

I only use a card if there is a rewards program to go with it. If you would like to compare over 300 cards, visit yahoo.com and in the finance section you can....
oh well here is the link.

I have the Chase Stockback card and love it!! I think it's a great way to save. The program was easy to set up and I haven't had any billing problems. Stockback offers additional cashback savings when you purchase from particular online and/or brick and mortar stores.

I recently called retention to request a lower interest rate. The rep stated the lowest they could go was 9.9%? This is not a bad rate for a rewards card, but I believe a couple people on this board have received the 6.9% rate even on the Stockback? The rep stated if I converted to the regular platinum, I could receive that rate. Not sure if that is correct. I'll probably badger them some more. LOL

    Good luck on your choice!!

You can´t convert a charge card(Gold) for a credit card (Blue). You need to apply for the Blue first (Hard inquire) and if approved then you could call them to close your charge card and "probably" will be able to transfer the MR points to the Blue.

yes and amex will be glad to cancel your gold, apply for the blue, deny you, and leave you with nada.

You can then beg for the gold back ;)

    ask me how i know.

I thought I saw one somewhere but I guess not.

Scores are great (740s-780s). I do not want any inquiries as I will be applying for a mortgage soon. AMEX sent me the offer to accept blue so I was curious. Blue does not impress me that much as I already have rates that are the same or lower.

    Thanks again for the info.

That's why I thought you could transfer cards - same MR points.
    Thanks for your reply,

This is the logic I am using now. Give me something for using your card. Also, I have checked out similar sites (Bankrate,CardWeb, etc.) My goal is to switch within one of my existing banks to avoid a ard inquiry.

    Thanks for the info,

Rates do not matter as I will be paying the balance each month. I keep seeing up to 11% back which sounds to good to be true. I will take a hard for 11%.
    Thanks for the info,

    Luvjdm,
The yahoo site is cool. It gives the Ltd. Ed. hulk card as the one to get but I think I like the Chase perfectcard better.
