Here I am, totally pissed with AmEx, and I have in my hand an invitation for their Platinum card!! It's a real invitation - no questions, just give my SSN and sign my name.

If I had gotten this last week I would have jumped on it - now I hesitate to put out $300 a year for a card with a company that thinks they have a right to embarrass me in public.

I had emailed customer service about my "incident" and today I got a reply - it was "sorry for the inconvenience... sometimes we do that.... we reserve that right..."

I guess I will wait and decide about the Platinum when I see the response to my PFB letter.

They MIGHT let you still be "PRE-APPROVED" for one of the golds...

George, she's already pre-approved for Platinum -- nobody took that away from her.

    GREEN TO PLATINUM???

And I can't even get AMEX BLUE to increase the credit limit or reduce the interest rate after 2 years...

I think I am going to "CHUCK IT ALL"...go out of the credit card business...
Refinance my mortgage with CASH OUT and just do with--out credit cards...

    :(

I typed the approval # wrong...because I only got 5 numbers because somebody sent a fax on my
line and cut off my call...IT STILL WORKED...

Hey breeze, I got the same invite last week. I thought the tissue paper was such a touch lol. But seriously although I would like to carry the card, I can't fathom paying 300.00 for it:(

    Hey Breeze!

Don't feel too bad about your issue. I got declined for a 6.74 charge at the grocery store on my Cap1 Gold card. Yes, I had plenty of room for the charge :)

they tried 4 times and kept getting decline. Then I later called Cap1 and they couln't tell me why even... they had no records of a charge even trying to go through.

I didn't even have enough cash with me to get what I'd picked out... so I got a can of cat food and left.

Funny now... not very last night. My cat got breakfast but I went without cereal this morning :_)

I think it is a possibility that the service the merchant is using to authorize the purchase was either overworked or having system problems. I recall when working at Lenscrafters several years ago we actually switched the service which the card authorization was routed through because of situations like this.

While I agree it is a bit embarrassing, by the same token, I offer patience to the people who still pay by paper check or insist on counting out the change of less than a dollar, even if it is in pennies - I expect the same consideration from those behind me in line.

Yeah it is a lot, but if you like to travel the perks are "priceless."

Oh wow!! now I do feel better! That is awful! Cap One is the one that did the security check - they called my house, left a message to call on my machine. When I called and keyed in my card number it asked if I had made a specific charge on the card. Now that I don't mind at all.

I don't think it was a Cap1 issue... I do think the grocery store system screwed up. Cap1 didn't even see an attempt at a charge, much less 4 of them. I was just embarassed and irritated that I would have to go back and get groceries.

So I did just that tonight. Bought tons of groceries not just cereal and cat food. Now we all have plenty for the month :)

And my Cap1 card worked just fine tonight...

I thought about that when I read the email from customer service - they mentioned the possibility that they could not process it. (that incomplete sentence was the service rep's, not mine). I have had busy signals before but not anything like this.

Good idea George. if everyone did that it wouldn't take them long to get their act together.
