    I applied about three weeks ago. They initially checked experian (720 score, no derogs). About 2 weeks went by and I called them. They said it was being processed. About a week later I called and they said I was denied. I checked my TU report and they had pulled that 2 weeks from the first experian pull. What is that all about? They pulled one report and then waited 2 weeks and pulled from another CRA? TU is my worst. Why would they pull 2 reports?

    I had to think about your suggestion for a minute. I see what you are saying. Would that work on all inquiries? Is there any rule that says they can only pull 1 report? I'm going to call them for "reconsideration" and ask why they pull 2 reports. I'm not applying for a mortgage! If you enter a dispute just as "duplicate" is that enough?

    INQUIRY 1 DISCOVERCARD---->DUPLICATE PLEASE REMOVE
    INQUIRY 2 DISCOVERCARD---->DUPLICATE PLEASE REMOVE

    One report per 30 days...

    They just "PULL" again because they won't walk to some file or HUNT on-line for it...TOO MUCH TROUBLE...

    If your lucky...BOTH GONE...

    Thanks George. I don't know why I applied anyway. I guess I just wanted another trophy. I have amex, visa, and mastercard. Discover would have completed the collection. Maybe they'll reconsider.

    Get this, Discover calls wife last week and tells her she is pre-selected over the phone. (I think preselected means you meet their credit requirements, although I understand it is different than pre-approved.)

    So she goes ahead and applies over the phone. Then she calls back the next day to find out what her CL will be and they tell her she was denied. WTF did they call for then. Psych your mind! How mean, call someone up, trick them into applying, then deny them. If she didn't meet their requirements why call, just to trick us into an inq? Discover sucks...

    MBNA, Cap1, Discover ... lots of companies do it. It winds up being cheaper (on a per new account opened basis) to do an outbound call campaign than a direct mail. Calls get a higher response rate, and if you happen to have an outbound call center (collections dept.) with some "down" time, it doesn't cost any real money to do it.

    Same rules apply - pre-selected, pre-approved... "pre-" anything doesn't mean jack. It just means that you are a likely suspect. The real approval (underwriting) happens after you click send, mail the form, or say "yes". You' re in no better position at that point than anyone else (exception: Amex Green, Sears, and some gas cards seem to still do "real" pre-approvals).
