Years ago I went shopping with my Dad and notice he hadn't signed any of this credit cards. When I asked him why, he said it was so that if someone stole his credit cards, they wouldn't be able to forge his signature. I pointed out that the crook could just sign his name on the signature strip, then they wouldn't have to forge his signature, because it would match however they signed it.

He signed all his credit cards after that.

Good point, I guess I must be afraid of losing more parts of my writing hand.

That PDF from the state of Indiania is GR-8!!

    BOTTOM LINE>>>>

I guess I can't sue for that.... although it DOES border on "Racial Profiling"....

I'm amazed at all the to show ID or not arguments. I live in BF Texas, and 99 and 9/10 of the places I go have the machines where you yourself swipe the card and then back in the wallet it goes.

    Its really scary.

I have no cc's at this time, but I use DH's Amex green and platinum and a Bancreceer Visa, sign my name and nobody questions me. I'm not a joint or AU, and the credit card companies have never even questioned it!

I can count on one finger the number of times I have been asked for ID.

Then there was the visa debit card issue. The signature had worn off. Dingbat says I can't accept it without a signature, hands me a pen and asks me to sign the back. DUH!

It may be GR-8, but it is N-CORRECT. Even the misspellings and poor grammar belie the work of a pseudo-informed communications section employee. Call VISA, MasterCard, and AmEx.

You, and your Dad have missed the point entirely.

If someone steals my card and signs my name, the signature would look NOTHING like my signature because he had nothing to copy/emulate.

When it gets down to proving it's a fraudulant signature there will MUCH less trouble doing so, because the signature will look nothing like my REAL one.

IT WILL NOT BE STOPPED AT STORE LEVEL...that is the point

It will be charged to the customer...the customer will dispute it...the customer gets "provisional" credit...THEY ASK FOR A SIGNATURE THAT IS NOTARIZED...2 months later...FINAL OUTCOME...YOU WIN...IT IS NOT YOUR SIGNATURE!!! YOU DON'T PAY!!!

It is very rare for anyone to check our credit cards. Heck, when I was engaged I used my then fiances cc all the time and not one time was I asked for ID. I mean, here I am a guy using a womans cc that has a strange last name because she is indonesian and nobody cared. Once in awhile now target checks the signature but that is about all. My wife still uses my target card because we want to keep hers clear of debt. I love target.

If you sign "See my ID for signature" a thief would not be able to sign his signature in place of yours. Who ever knew that asking for ID for YOURs and the BUSINESSES protection would ever raise so many hackles. Go figure. Like I said in the earlier posts, I wish I had so few problems soa s to complain about my ID being checked.

What is the big problem with just taking your ID out and showing it to the merchant?

It takes what, a couple of seconds?

Are you folks just arguing for the principle or is there a serious problem in there? I don't see one, really.

Ask anyone who's been through ID Theft. Teaches you real quick that merchants should check the ID.

When I was shopping at Office Depot last year, I handed the clerk what I thought to be my AmEx. It turned out later, when I checked the bill, that we accidentally switched the credit cards with my DH and I handed the clerk an AmEx card bearing the name of my husband. He didn't even blink, although a woman just handed him a cc with a man's name on it.

Do you really want that happening?

    "VOID IF NOT SIGNED"
    "NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED"

    SIGN AND GO
NOT SIGN AND SHOW ID AND GO

    LOOK AT IT THIS WAY...

It is not a check...I am not presenting a "PROMISSORY NOTE" when they get AUTH# they get paid...

A check you can ask for...
    DL/STATE ID CARD
    WORK ADDRESS
    WORK PHONE
HOME PHONE (if not already on check)
"SEE" A CREDIT CARD WITH SAME NAME AS ON CHECK

"IF" they "ELIMINATE" the signature strip...and print on the front...ID REQUIRED WITH EVERY SALE...I WILL GO ALONG WITH THE PLAN!!!

But it has to be 100% FOR EVERY CARD...FOR EVERY BUSINESS!!!

They would have to get together with 100% of the card issuers and 100% of the businesses and pick some date like say JANUARY 1, 2005 ALL CARDS MUST HAVE THE NEW WORDS AND OLD CARDS WOULD BE "PULLED" AND WOULD NEVER AUTHORIZE!!! That would mean EVERYBODY WOULD HAVE TO GET NEW CARDS...

Issuing everybody a new card for every account that they have!!!

THE LOGISTICS OF THAT WOULD BE MIND BOGGLING!!!

...and I can't even get AMEX to RE-ARRANGE my credit limits on my two cards (2.5 MONTHS)!!!

SEE THIS???------>I WILL GO ALONG WITH THE PLAN!!!

you know what since i've been using my amex blue i have YET to be asked for ID. I used to get carded all the time with my check card or visa.

    thats kinda odd.

    anyhoo.

    amex explained it like this:

    1. The merchant gets to make the policy call on ID.
    2. Amex doesn't require ID, nor do they care if #1 chooses to do so.
    3. Amex recommends ID on high ticket items like electronics.

but in the end "We don't care".

Straight out of the horses mouth at amex 5 minutes ago.

    Remember there is a
    Store --> Merchant --> Amex.

Each sets their own policies and relationships.
