Thought I had this figured out by now. :(

I'll try to make this brief. I chose a pay as you go company for internet service b/c we travel for the summer. We used them last year with great success, and thought going back was a no-brainer. I couldn't have been more wrong on that one.

They couldn't get it to work and cited a hardware problem. After numerous calls, I gave them an alternate address (other than the one used last year) to which they could send a replacement device. They erroneously sent it to my home address, where no one would be for 6-8 weeks. I called them again as soon as I got the ship notification to let them know. They fixed it and sent a second pkg to the correct address, but never recalled the original pkg that was sent to the vacant home. I told them that there was no one to receive the pkg. My concerns were dismissed.

Nothing but probs ensued and I ended up canceling the service after only one month. They offered me a refund of half the fees paid on my visa (through my bank, but not debit-). Weeks passed and I didn't see this refund. I sent multiple emails inquiring that went unanswered. I contacted my cc company to file a dispute. After that, I was finally advised by this company that I would get the refund once I returned the device that may or may not be sitting on my porch when I got back. I won the dispute, they credited the fees and interest charges and I thought I was through.

Now, almost 2 mos later, I got an email stating that since I filed with the credit card company I now owe them for the original amount (not including the refund amt they promised) PLUS an additional $100 for the device that was NOT sitting on my porch when we finally arrived home. Shocker.

I called the cc company and they assured me that they couldn't re-charge my card, but if I don't pay, they're going to send it to their collection agency. What do I do? I have no problem paying the amount actually owed, which is one third of the amt they're now demanding, but how can I be held responsible for their screw ups and shipping errors? The original bill paid was $94, they promised a credit of $40 and now they're telling me I owe them $200. I saved all email correspondence re: the bill and credits just for this reason.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your situation. I know how annoying these kinds of problems can be.

Anyway, it sounds like your best option at this point may be to just get in touch directly with the company, provide all the documentation you have of what took place, and hopefully they'll be reasonable enough to take what it is you do owe them and call it even.

Whatever you do, don't let this go into collections and damage your credit scores over $200. That would be a real shame.
