    bump

    as a response? what does that mean? shorthand for go to the next step, or what? sorry to be such a newbie, but I've seen it dozens of times, and have never been certain of its meaning

    Maggie,

    In volleyball, the "bump" is the move designed to get the ball off the floor level and back into play. It's not intended to score but rather to give another player on the team the opportunity to set the ball into scoring range.

    Most folks have their system set up to display only the twenty or so most recent posts. Posts rapidly get pushed down to the second or third page. Therefore, somebody has to "bump" them back to the top of the list and back into play, where another team member can "score" by answering the question.

    Yes it's just a way to get people to look at and hopefully respond to a post.
