I need some advice. In 1998, I closed my account with a credit union of long-standing as I was moving out of the area. The account had zero balance at the time, but I left my new address in case something unexpected came in. I moved twice rapidly in succession and never heard from them. Well, my credit report shows a $122 charge off from them for fees after the fact. These folks are updating my report on a monthly basis and I need to deal with this. My first tact was to call the Credit Union and make an inquiry of what I owed. I let them know that I moved twice and there must be some mistake and I want to take care of the issue. They said to send the money and they will note the account as "paid". How nice!! No way am I doing that. They also said that MCT (Money Control Technology) was the CA and that they will forward the money off to them. Now I am wondering if this is an assigned account or what. I do know they communicate because they called MCT while I was on the phone and got the final figure ($180) which must include their fees. I am happy to pay this off with deletion....but it isn't looking good. I'm thinking I should validate with MCT. What do y'all think?
Why are you willing to pay if you do not owe anything? Or at least get an itemization ie explanation of how you ended up owing money AFTER you closed the account. By all means, VALIDATE!
You could also try calling back to the credit union and speak to the president or manager there. Explain it again. If you don't get any satisfaction,advise him/her that you are filing complaints with the BBB, FTC, your state banking dep't., your state atty gen'l, the comptroller of the currency and anybody else you can think of. And then do it, as well as send the validation. One other thing you may try is Planetfeedback. A lot of people get positive results through them.
