I wrote to TU to dispute some inquiries that are clearly not mine. I asked them to provide proof that they were mine, i.e. a document bearing my signature. They wrote back and basically told me "trust us, they are your inquiries made by you, but we don't have to give you the verification documents; if you want to argue these inquiries, you have to do so directly with the creditor." What should I do next? Are they right, do I have to contact the original creditor? If not, what should I do? Any suggestions, please?

If you don't recognize inquiries from anyone, contact them directly and ask for their permissible purpose. They were required to file a certification of permissible purpose with the CRA stating their usual reason for inquiring. As far as the CRA is concerned, unless you show otherwise, they have done their job.

Some users cannot use a blanket certification, and must certify each inquiry. (Typically not OCs and CAs, perhaps attorneys litigating, or employment background checking firms.) There is an FTC letter regarding this somewhere.
