I have a tuition bill from 7/96. This bill is for classes I signed up for, but never attended. When I dealt w/ this a few years ago, the problem was one of the professors actually gave me an incomplete. WTF? I never even stepped foot in the doors of the school. So, I had a hard time convincing them that I never attended that semester. The last late fee was applied on 10/96. I have no idea what they would use as a DOLA on this. I'm trying to find out if there is a SOL on tuition bills. Of course the CA said no, that there is no SOL on school related bills. The SOL in the state of Maine is 6 years, so it would be right around this time. Apparently, this is the 3rd CA to handle this. I also called the school last week, and they sent me a copy of the bill. I'm fairly sure that I can go thru them to pay, but I don't have the $$$ to do so at the moment. The CA called again today, and I told them the validation letter was in the mail, that I have already contacted the school, and that all future contact should be in writing. He said thank you and hung up! Now, is there a SOL on tuition bills (no SL involved?) I"m hoping this doesn't show up on my CR's. I'm assuming if it did, it would only be there for another year anyway (but I just cleaned them up, I don't want a collection on there) I'm glad that the school sent me a copy of the bill, so I can prove the dates in case the CA decides to try to reage it, since it's so old!! TIA for any help and advice!
I am going through the exact same thing. The school sent the tuition bill to the state collection agency who refuse to budge after validation. They sent me a computer ptint out of the bill they say I owe and consider that validation. As far as I know tuition is subject to the same SOL as other debts in your state. The difference being if it was a student loan. Student loans have no SOL as far as I know but since there was never a loan the SOL should stand. I am still not sure what I want to do about my situation, since I am sure if I push they may try to get a jusgement and probably will because it was a state school and the collection agency is also run by the state. I'm still feeling this one out,
can they get a judgement after SOL? I really want to pay this, directly to the school. Last time I tried, they would only take a lump sum, to installment. Eventually I would like to go back to school, so would need this paid to get my transcripts. Before I do anything though, I need to know if there is a SOL on this. If there is, it would give me time to get it paid off. All I got was a printout of the bill from the school too. But, I know this is my bill. I KNOW I signed up for classes, I KNOW I never withdrew. I KNOW it was around $800. I guess I don't know the EXACT amount, but it's within $15. I'm not sure I have a leg to stand on to fight the school, I just want to be able to get rid of the CA!
