Hi everyone, I am new and have been reading on this site for DAYS! I saw a post that I cannot find. Basically, right no I can only meet my minimum payments. Someone posted that if you divide the minimum into two payments per month, you pay down the debt faster, can someon send me the link to the post?

    Thanks!

I don't have, or remember the link, but I can explain the reasoning behind it. This all has to do with the compounding interest, and the number of days a balance accrues the interest.

Simply put, if you make 1/2 the minimum payment say three weeks before the due date, then the balance which the interest is accrued on is reduced. So, the next 1/2 minimum payment is going toward a "smaller" balance now.

This sounds good, but the true effect (and how much you save) depends upon the balance on your account, and the interest rate on the account, as well as the grace period for purchases.

In short, it may not make that much of a difference. If you can do it, it is best to pay the full minimum payment as early as you can (before the due date). This is even more "compounding" than 1/2 and 1/2 payments.

Depending upon your total financial situation, there are several "accelerating paydown" methods. There are two popular methods, each with certain advantages:

    1) Lowest cost paydown: this method has you total up all your CC debt, and total all monthly payments. Look at your monthly budget, and ability to pay. Start with the account that has the highest interest rate, and pay the most you can on that account, while paying the "minimum" on the others. As that account is paid off, continue with the next highest rate, and so forth.

    2) Psychological method: This involves paying the most you can to the "lowest balance" account, while paying the minimum to the rest, and continue through the ascending balances. This method gives the most "psychological boost", and is perhaps a better motivator.

Sorry, for the quick descriptions, but if you have further questions, please post. More details may help give specific advice that is best for your situation.
