it sounds like for legal reasons most credit cards won't allow a joint to single user change. They usually want you to close the and open a new one.

They would rather LOSE the account???

    Their LOSS not mine!!!

They make MORE money with a "STORE" card than VISA/MC/AMEX/DISCOVERCARD

Usually there is a primary cardholder. If you try to remove the primary cardholder, there is no more account. If you remove an authorized user or a secondary cardholder, the account would probably remain the same.

Q: Are there any advantages to a joint account, as opposed to a cardholder-authorized user arrangement?

If you could use an AU's good credit to get a high limit (which isn't at all certain) and then remove the AU (which is child's play), it looks like this plan could work.

We APPLIED that way...it was 20+ years ago!!!

    "AU" is a RECENT DEAL...

Do credit card companies use AU's credit history to determine line? I think if they use their credit history they're not an AU - they are a co-applicant/joint card holder and that would be similar to GEORGE's situation. I believe that on apps they ask if you want a second card for someone else and that would be an AU - as they won't check the AU's credit so how can that affect raising a CL? Am I way off base here? AU=No credit check, no higher CL. Co-applicant=(maybe)higher CL & credit check.

    GEORGE:

AUTHORIZED USERS ARE AS OLD AS THE HILLS. REQUIRING EXTENSIVE PERSONAL DATA ABOUT AUTHORIZED USERS IS RELATIVELY NEW.

    nickpaige,

    Here are a few thoughts:

Some of the touchtone systems offered by credit card banks use the phrase "primary cardholder's social security number."

Some credit card applications mention "other" or perhaps "joint" applicants. Others simply offer another card to someone whose personal data and SS number you provide, without calling that person an applicant. And still others simply ask for the name of the authorized user, so they can put it on the other credit card.

I guess my definition of an "authorized user" is "someone whose name can easily be removed from an account." Whether banks pull credit reports on these people can only be determined empirically; that is, by observing what the banks actually do. If they do, then what I suggested could have a chance of working.

Also, I think that credit scores have more of an influence on approval, while household income and existing credit limits have more of an influence on credit limits. If you include another person's income with your own, for whatever reason, on an application, you can probably accomplish much of what others could using the "joint applicant" approach.

    "WE" APPLIED AS "JOINT"

    TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!

"AU" WAS NOT AN OPTION AT THE TIME!!! or it was NEVER offered or sugested...

Re: Unique way to get a High CL CC?

    George,

I fully believe that you have a joint account.

    However:

    (1) It must not be as common as it once was.

    (2) The point you made was that you can't remove a joint account holder. Therefore, a joint account wouldn't help the person who originally asked the question. I was hoping to find another way. Even if you have an insoluble problem, I still feel free to try to help other people solve theirs.

    (3) I know for a fact that many credit card applications have offered additional cards for people other than the applicant for a long time. Longer than 20 years. If you never had that option, I'm sorry, but other people have had and do have that option.

    (4) About a month ago, I removed an authorized user on 3 different accounts. It was remarkably easy. I was hoping that the ease of doing so could somehow be transferred to the newer, more formal concept of "authorized user," which often includes personal data and a credit report.
