so I just got a collection notice from United Collection Bureau from an old Verizon acct. If I pay it right away directly to Verizon, do you think that it will get reported? or does United usually hold off for 1 month from receiving the acct?

You have to deal with the collection agency. Verizon wrote the debt off and sold it to United. Same thing happened to me/Cingular/collection agency.

You can call Verizon and ask them if they'll pull it back and allow you to pay them. It depends on whether they sold the debt or assigned it for collections.

If they've sold it, they'll tell you that you have to deal with the CA.

called Verizon, they said since my payment history had been good they'd pull it and not report it. They also said they'd send me a letter stating such once I made the payment. I went ahead and paid it. Think I made the right choice?
