Okay fellow creditnetters, on Feb 6, 2003, I disputed Mercantile Adjustment Bureau which is located in Rochester NY. Yesterday, I received the standard printout of services. I think my brother may have used this information, since I am in California and they are in NY. Anyhow, with my printout is the name of 2 other Niagara Mohawk customers, addresses, service dates, balance dues and their telephone number. WTF..does our information float freely along the wind to be seen by any unscrupulous jerk who can read (I am not unscrupulous and only a jerk occasionally). Now what should I do, what should I do? I feel like notifying NY State AG and advising them of this situation.

    It does happen sometimes.
What to do? Well I tend to think that what you should do is first of all sit down and think out your goals. Seems to me that you basically have about 3 choices.

1.Scream bloody murder. Scream to the AGs in both states and maybe to the FTC too. It might fall under one of Lizard King's old threats, enablement of identity theft. That is an argument that has been brought before the courts by litigation attorneys in the past although I have not seen anything on it for a while. I would tend to think that if you contacted Lizard King for some advice on that part of the issue he could give you some very good info and ideas on the matter. I tend to think that if anyone could tell you about that he would be the one to do it. He may be hanging around on creditboards.com these days so you might have to run over there to contact him.

    2. I tend to think that another course of action you might want to take might be demanding validation and building towards a possible law suit against them.

    3. Well I suppose you could just shrug your shoulders and say "So what" but I don't think you would consider that to be a viable option. (LOL)

And yet another one is to do both 1 and 2 at the same time.

    Good luck.

Bill you left out option #4.

    4. Social engineering. Have you ever thought about trying to contact the persons whose personal info you have? How do you think they would react if they recieved a letter out of the blue including a copy of what they sent you and quoting some laws and referred them to a lawyer? Heck you could even try getting them to validate and end up getting your info sent to them. Wouldn't that be a nice lawsuit? Then again you'd probably end up with a couple of apathetic losers who could care less.

You have been handed a potential legal hand grenade. Its up to you to figure out how to use it.

Hopefully I've just got your hampster wheel turning in the right direction.

First question however. How would their personal information get sent anywhere?

Then how do you propose I mignt do that?

No, the thought never crossed my mind. I would have no reason to do so.
Nor would I contact any other person or non person about them. What earthly reason would I have to do so?

I leave social engineering to government. They are the experts at such things, not I.
Since those kinds seem to appear like the ducks in spring I presume that you may have a valid point.
Thank you. Our better soldiers learned how to handle handgrenades long ago. They would quickly pick it up and throw it back at the enemy. Although you may or may not be an enemy depending on your point of view and not mine I will follow the lead of our braver soldiers.

While not necessarily legal in nature it is none the less a hand grenade of sorts.
So hopefully I now have just got your hampster wheel turning in the right direction.

Let's see how you handle that one.

This is like the same post about another ca that was posted Fri. Is this something the ca's decided they wanted to start doing all of a sudden? What morons.

The information returned is for 2 women. The information gives their telephone numbers, addresses, beginning balance and end balance. MY wheels have already started turning. I was thinking deletion of my tradeline and no further contact.

The account is dated 1999 and is located in NY $144.00. I was thinking of calling the supervisor, attaining the name and send off a nice little letter cc The attorney general for NY State and CA.

I am really concerned. I feel that these companies make it really easy for someone to steal my identity. What if someone else requested validation and they sent my information off to them. That sickens me.
