validation from OC

I have a question that I hope someone can answer. First, I'm a newbie and have been searching the boards for a few weeks.

My situation is this: My credit reports lists a debt of $4500 owed to an original creditor. I admit that I owe the debt but its much lower than $4500. Can I request validation of this debt from an original creditor and will it do me any good to do so? During my search, I've only been able to find validation letters sent to collection agenies.

    Thanks.

Is it being reported by a CA, or by the OC?

The validation requirements in the FDCPA apply to CAs, not to OCs, although there may be state law that applies similar requirements to OCs.

The OC is required to report correctly if they are reporting, and the new FACTA changes to FCRA provide for disputing directly with any data furnisher, even the OC.
