Many times each day I get the message that "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". Each time the program shuts down and I have to start over. It became a serious problem when I upgraded to the XP Office Suite. Today, I got the same message, but in the title bar, after the Microsoft logo, was the word "underwater". The program did not shut down, but I was not able to get out of there without shutting down the computer. I tried the cntrl - alt -dlt to no avail. What is this? It reminds me of a joke some friends played a few years back. They installed a program that, among other things, caused this warning to be changed to "you have performed an immoral operation on your computer, you deviate" Any help is appreciated.
That sounds like a screensaver that was acting up. I've been getting the same errors but it was from upgrading to IE6. I went back to IE5 and they've stopped for the most part. Did you build or buy your system? What exactly do you have? Memory going bad can also cause error messages like that.
I have a HP Pavillion with 550 processor and about 300 meg ram, 20 gig hard drive. Everything started acting up when I upgraded to the new Microsoft XP suite. I did not upgrade my windows 98 and wonder if that may be the problem. The error messages started as soon as I upgraded. I get the illegal operation one at least 10 times a day. Thanks for your comments
it sounds like you may be running programs that are incompatible in some way. I get the same message if I forget to stop black ice engine before trying to connect to the internet. Sometimes it completely restarts my computer.
I'm a s/w engineer, and our company uses Microsoft COM, among other products, to build our applications...but nothing they say can convince us to move to XP. It's a security flop. All you need is a guy/gal with a little knowlege & a lot of time on their hands...
Karen, Sounds like you are running a "Theme" with your Windows. If you right click anywhere on your desktop, then go to properties you should find the desktop settings. All you should need to do is deactivate the themes. -Sal
I finally got rid of all the "illegal Operation" messages I was getting. I stopped using the screen savers and the messages stopped. What is interesting is that most of my software is from Microsoft as are the screensavers. Apparently they were not compatible with each other. I only got the messages when using the Microsoft software.
