I had been fighting with a collection agency over something on my Equifax report from 1996. Last July I finally agreed to pay the collection in exchange for deletion. This was a dental bill my insurance didn't pay and if I had known about it at the time I would have paid it then (I moved out of state). The CA agreed to delete for payment but the entry was never deleted. I would dispute the tradeline with Equifax and they would verify it every time. I would call the CA and they would tell me Equifax never sent them anything and that they had sent the UDF for deletion last year. The CA would tell me I needed to call Equifax and Equifax would only put the item in dispute and verify it each time. Finally I convinced Equifax to contact a specific person at the CA and the tradeline was deleted yesterday. I checked my score this morning, and I actually lost a point between yesterday and today for the deletion. Just when you think you have this whole credit scoring thing figured out...
One, wait 24 hours. The computers may not have updated your score yet. Two, the account was 6 years old and should not have that much impact on your score. There have been different opinions mentioned about this but from what I have gathered, as long as you still have any other derogatory items on a report, getting a 6 year old entry deleted won't yield a great increase in points. In any case, congratulations. Out of curiosity, may I ask what your credit score is?
I had a collection agency from 1996 deleted from experian and my score only went up 4 points. Sucks, but at least that's one less negative. Janet
Basically, George is right.
