What Is My Next Step?

Earlier in the year I sent a DV letter to a CA regarding an old Cap One account. Yesterday I received a letter from Cap one saying:

"In oreder to research your request, we must have your 16 digit account number. From the information given, we have been unable to locate this number. Please write your account number in the space provided below......."

This card was cut up in 2000 so I have no idea what the account number is. Can I now say the debt is not mine or what? What is the next step? Any help and thoughts would be helpful. Thank you.

If they can't find it, that's not *your* problem.

I would use that letter as "evidence" when I dispute or re-dispute with the CRA's. I have noticed that when Transunion sends me an updated report (happens often lately as they delete fiction from my report) they list the whole account #'s from accounts. If this one is being reported on TU you could research their "original" mailed copy to you.

So should I send a copy of the letter to the big 3 to get it removed?

    Yes.

If Cap One admits it can't find the number....
