I disputed an old chargeoff and today I got a letter from the OC that said:

"We are writing to you in reference to your recent credit bureau dispute indicating this account is not yours. At this time, we are requesting that you send us a signed letter of dispute so we can proceed with our investigation."

Why do they want me to send a signed letter? Don't they have to verify this information without me responding?

    Do NOT send them anything.

They are required to "PROVE IT" or "REMOVE IT" you do not need to provide ANY information in order for them to do that. Period.

I agree! Wait the 30day investigation period and see how they respond to the CRA.

Same thing happened to me recently. Account had dropped off of 2 CRA reports and I disputed as "not mine" on the third. Got a reply from the OC with an attached AFFIDAVIT OF FACT - FRAUDULENT CREDIT APPLICATION.....telling me to fill it out. Their letter even said that they were unable to clearly determing my responsibility for the account. They listed it as disputed on the CRA report...needless to say, I have not filled it out....will dispute again in 30 days.

I don't recall if I responded to this before, but, if they sent you a letter stating they cannot determine your responsibility, then rather than mark it disputed, they need to delete it. Maybe send a copy of that letter to the cra and tell them can't prove - must remove.
