Hi all, I am new here and have a question. I have 5 cc one I have had for 2 years and is a 1500 secured card, another two I had just under 2 years, one is 550 limit the other is 350...all three of these are from first premier back. I also just received a cap one card with a 300 limit and an am ex with $2000 limit....obviously I am gonna keep the amex, but will getting rid of the older cards hurt my score....thanks in advance for the help

Jk, I would tell you not to get rid of any of them since the credit is so young. Also which amex do you have and what kind of scores did you have when you got it.

As long as there is no annual fee, it doesn't hurt to keep accounts open and unused. High ratios of outstanding balance to available credit hurt FICO scores, so closing accounts may actually lower FICO. Also, length of account history plays a large role in FICO, so letting a card sit but using it occasionally to build up a long history of paying on time helps. The small limit cards may also offer credit line increases over time. As your overall credit picture improves, you will begin to get better offers.

Keep at least your oldest card, even if you pay some fees, because the length of history is one of the factors in your score. So getting rid of them will hurt your score.

One of the other big factors is your usage ratio, which is the ratio of balance to credit limits. Again, the extra credit limits will help keep your scores up.

Since they're all the same bank, why not call them and see if you can combine them all into one card. That will keep your history and total credit limit, but decrease the number of accounts.

Actually, for new credit, I don't think having five accounts is necessarily bad.

At this point, you really need to keep everything open. Use the card that has the lowest rate for day to day stuff. Use your other cards once every month to keep them active.

After you have 1 card for about 4 years, begin to cancel one card at a time spread out over 12 month intervals beginning with the least desirable card.

Sucks, but you have to do this until you get 3-5 prime cards in your hands and allow them to age for awhile.

I was thinking of getting rid of the capital one since it is the newest...with the exception of the amex.... I got the Hilton Honors Platinum Amex and my score was 668...not great, but a long way from where I have been...I use the cards for next to nothing and carry zero or minimal balances....the idea of closing the secured one has been tempting though...that is 1500 bucks that is doing nothing for me...but I guess I will keep it open...thanks for the input

Can you ask them to make it unsecured and keep the history? I don't know if they will or not, but it can't hurt to ask.
