I too need this info. But please don't fall in love with a particular car. (I know you love it, but a dealer trick is to let you drive a particular vehicle to assure there is no turning back.) If your credit is not A1, you should try and settle for something you can afford; in fact, even less then you can afford. At this point in time, you must be sure that you build your credit and will not run into future problems anytime soon.

This is one case where delaying gratification will pay off. By making on time payments for 1-2 years your prospects will improve immensely and then go for that Mountaineer!! You will save thousands and your credit rating will be looking great. Can't beat that! Patience is the keyword here.

A car loan is probably the worst sort we can get because the product deteriorates in value extremely quickly and at the end of the loan is worth way, way less then what you paid for it.

BTW, some books mention Ford Motor Credit as being credit user friendly. They recommend laying your cards on the table and asking the manager (not a salesperson) what they can do for you within your range of affordability.

My dream vehicle is a Subaru Forrester, but even used ones are still too high for our budget. So I'm just looking for a reliable vehicle to go from point A to point B with decency, knowing that when our scores improve, that Forrester will someday be ours.

I know this isn't what you want to hear but think of the amount of debt you are wanting to take on at this point in time. I'm only suggesting the above because I do want to see you in that Mountaineer, but when you can really afford it and get a great rate without jeopardizing your credit rating. Keep in mind debt to income ratios as well. You don't want to lock yourself out of future purchases you may have to make.

    Good luck whatever you decide.
