Would this be considered frivolous?

I am trying to decide whether or not to dispute a name on my credit reports. I have previously used my "husband's"(common law marriage) last name to obtain credit cards but my social security card and drivers license are under my maiden name. I have never gotten these changed due to the fact that I have no "marriage license". I am worried about the CRAs considering the name dispute as frivolous since almost all my negative accounts were obtained using my "married name". Has anyone had luck getting a name removed from the credit reports and has this helped in getting negative accounts deleted?

You may be sucessful and it may be worth a try although if you are trying to change your name back to your original "non-commonlaw" name in the hopes of getting negative credit deleted based on this you probably won't be sucessful. They will be verifying your social security number and address. Also if you look on your credit report it will list any other names used in association with your Soc#.

This is similar to anyone who has been married as it will list their maiden name.

Be sure of the laws regarding commonlaw marriages in your state. You may have violated the law if there are certian provisions that you haven't met. If you've broken state law and are not really considered commonlaw married then furnishing that last name on a credit application is considered a violation of federal law and can constitute fines and prison time.

Be sure of what you are doing before proceeding on this one.

    I wish you luck!

Thanks for your advice Tac. I have checked into the laws for common law marriage in my state, and I have honestly not violated any laws. We do meet the provisions for common law marriage. But as far as disputing the name, it may be better just to request validation on the negative accounts and just dispute the accounts with the creditors.
