i had an old library collection for some books. Im sure it was a legitimate acct, although I thought I did return the books at some point, but they have no record of it. It was being a reported as a current collection on my report, and according to the CRA's score explination, it was a major negative. So I called them and paid $100 and it will be changed to a paid acct on my report and no longer an active collection/past due/late etc etc.

    any opinions?

You should have paid only for deletion. A paid collection account is not any better than an unpaid collection account.

    Tuesday....

I paid the library directly over the phone. She sent an email to the CA. I called the CA and they said they are showing me now as PAID. She said they cannot remove items from the CRA. She said they did not have the power to that in their contract.

The lady at the library copied me on the email that she sent them. I got their email address from that and sent them an email explaining that they did not follow their own collection efforts as described on their website and that all they would have had to do is notify me of the debt and it would have been paid a long time ago. I explained that I took care of it the very minute I saw it on my report and asked them to please remove the item rather than call it 'paid'. I explained that they were hired by the library to collect, the library got paid, and they now have another successful collection under their belts and that i know it makes no difference to them how it is reported on my report, but it makes a HUGE difference to me. I told them that knew they had the power to remove if the had the power to put it on there in the first place.

I just hope a real person that knows how to think actually reads it and is in a good mood today.

Well.. I asked because I noticed you going off doing things without thinking them all the way through.

This board is replete with advice NOT to pay anything until you start negotiating. Whatever happens now that it's paid will be difficult.

We always suggest that people take the first month and do nothing but study before doing anything.

We make our own beds don't we?

    :(

    Start looking for violations.

the question is not whether we would have paid this, it is whether we would have paid it without a deletion of the account.

I have two collections right now under $100 that I could pay at any time... I will not because they will not delete at the present time I am sure they will change their mind soon :)
