I've had my checking account with them for years, and opened a Classic Visa 11/02 with a measley $500 CL. Last month, I applied for a Platinum Visa and was denied, the reason they gave me was I was not eligible for more than one account.

CSR told me that I could try for a credit limit increase, $2000 max so I tried and they gave me $1800. Then he said he would put in a request to upgrade my card to platinum. Never heard back, so I called today and the CSR couldn't give me a reason, except that she sees it says I am not eligible for an upgrade. I have never gone over my credit limit, nor have I made ANY late payments. I am also a banking customer of theirs since 1996.

Aren't they supposed to give me a reason, other than "I don't know, it just says you're not eligible for an upgrade"?

Move on to BofA or Citi and upgrade yourself from those losers.

    Fleet blows.....

Technically yes. Although the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) requries the creditor to give you a notice that tells you either the specific reasons for your rejection or your right to learn the reasons if you ask within 60 days. Acceptable reasons include: "Your income was low," or "You havenâ??t been employed long enough." Unacceptable reasons are: "You didnâ??t meet our minimum standards," or "You didnâ??t receive enough points on our credit-scoring system." Indefinite and vague reasons are illegal, so ask the creditor to be specific. Find out why you were offered less favorable terms than you applied forâ??unless you accept the terms. Ask for details. Examples of less favorable terms include higher finance charges or less money than you requested.

Fleet does blow...I hope when BofA takes over, my banking services will improve!

I recently got a BofA platinum visa, which was a preapproval I got in the mail. I wonder how my cards will be affected by the merger. I hate Citibank, as I am blacklisted from a student card they closed back in 1993, which I paid in full in 1996. The account was never charged-off or anything, and I have a savings and checking account with them, as well, but no dice...oh well.

Thanks, Michael - I tried asking for specifics, and one of the CSRs told me that their marketing dept. was responsible for their credit decisions (???). I don't think they're worth the energy, obviously they don't want to give me a straight answer.

The CSR I spoke with today told me that even a supervisor couldn't give me a reason. She wouldn't transfer me to the credit dept. (which from what I gather, is the marketing dept. LOL)

I wish I didn't bother to apply for the other one, what a waste of an inquiry :(

citychick, have you tried going to Citi's retention or management to get an override since you paid them in full?
