I had the good luck of finding this website earlier today. After reading a bit I wish I would have found it 2 years ago My Story: Pretty good credit up until 9/11/01. I am a travel agent and was actually in Hawaii when it happened. Ended up spending an additional 2k on plastic (citibank AAdvantage and amex hilton) due to additional hotel nighs, meals and tickets home. Of course business went into the toilet, my end of year bonus was on track to be about 5k but with all of the cancellations the commission was gone. Things got worse just after xmas, I somehow contracted infectious mononucleosis and was out of work for 2.5 months. With no income I was lucky to cover my rent and electric bills. The calls and letters began...we need xxxx.xx$$'s by xx/xx or we will sue you. I felt I had no choice but to file chapter 7. Filed in Oct 2002 and was discharged Jan of 2003. After reading here it looks like I could have very well avoided it but such is life. Onto my point. I am looking to buy a house late this year or early next year. Hopefully it can be acomplished. Since filing the BK I have applied for and received: Household bank MC - started with $300 limit last March, now $600 with about $50 balance as of today Capital One VI - started with $300 limit last June, was upped to 2,000 limit in November, current balance $450 (leftover xmas, will be $0 on 3/2) Raymour and Flanigan - Jan 27 2004 - In store approval for $1174 to purchase a sofa set. Interest free until Feb 2005. First order of business....should I pay off the Raymour and Flanigan next month, pay 1/2 next month then 1/2 in April or pay $100 month for the year. I have all of the money now to pay but which is better for credit score? I did just order my credit reports so they will be here next week and I can get some idea as to how bad/good it really is. Look for plenty more questions once they arrive.
not that i am an expert, but id say to pay over a course of time--probably not a whole year if u can afford it, maybe 3-6 months in even payments. thats what i would do.
