I've been searching the site for a while now, and was getting ready to send off a Goodwill letter to MBNA through PFB for a couple 30 day lates that occurred back in 99. I still have the card, and only have a hundred or so dollars available on a $1500 limit card. With a nearly maxed out cc, do you think there's any chance whatsoever that my Goodwill letter will go fulfilled or should I try to transfer the balance to another card, then close the account and then submit a goodwill letter?

IMO, I don't think it will be worth your time to write a goodwill letter when your card is nearly maxed. I remember a couple of years ago I asked for a rate cut from them and the CSR said that he couldn't do anything unless my balance was under 90% of the CL; that rule of thumb might extend to other consumer requests as well.

It wouldn't be to your benefit to close the account and then send a goodwill letter; you would lose most of your leverage that way. Some people have had success with closed accounts, but it seems to be a rare thing. If you pay down your balance and have had a steady payment history for the past year, and then send your letter, they will probably be more receptive to your request.

Again, this is just my notion--I'm still starting out with this credit game myself, so what do I really know? :)

Perhaps other folks here have sent goodwill letters for maxed out cards and gotten a positive response. Anyone?

As a matter of fact, I just sent a letter to MBNA myself today trying to get a 30-day removed from last year. I sent it as soon as my payment of $600 posted, hoping that would put them in a good mood.

Not a bad idea, sending the letter shortly after that large payment. I had the feeling that in a situation like this, they might not be too receptive to my letter, but I think I am going to send one anyway. Can't hurt, I guess...

No, it can't hurt at all. I figured that if they don't say yes to my letter now, then I'll wait a couple of months and send it again, and again, and again. At some point someone's bound to say yes!

Good luck! Hope it works out for you!

    Hi,
I am about ready to send MBNA a goodwill letter, but can't find reference to the "Credit Bureau Reporting Desk" at MBNA. Does anyone know where I should send this letter to?

    TIA,

    Ashgur

I had success with this address:

    Charles Cawley, CEO
    MBNA America
    1100 N. King St.
    Wilmington, DE 19884

    Good luck!
