In jail for being in debt | StarTribune.com

Just when you thought it was safe to check your credit...

It's hard to tell what's happening, precisely, but it looks like:

    1) JDB buys old debt
    2) JDB files in small claims court
    3) JDB may or may not perform legitimate service
    4) JDB moves for summary judgement

(now this is where I get fuzzy)

    5) JDB moves for garnishment
    6) Judge requires [alleged] debtor to submit information
    7) Debtor doesn't show up (didn't now, didn't take it seriously, etc.)
    8) Debtor is held in contempt
    9) Debtor goes to jail...for contempt.

    Something like that?

So, how to keep out of jail (for contempt)?

    1) pay you bills (duh!)
    2) check your credit
    3) send a DV if you see a collection on your credit report (to get FDCPA protection)
    4) Respond to court papers (i.e. at least check to see if they are legit)
    5) Don't ignore anything from the judge.

    Did I miss anything?

    I don't think so.
