I have cell phones with T-Mobile and Sprint PCS. The service with T-Mobile has been flawless, and their customer service and technical support folks have always been really helpful.

Sprint, on the other hand, has been a real PITA: spotty service, poor quality of calls, abysmal customer service, perpetually incorrect billing.

And so I decided today to call Sprint PCS, pay my bill and cancel my service, even though it would set me back $150 for early cancellation. I explained to the CSR how much I disliked the service. She told me she agreed, so much so that her cell service is with Nextel! She can't stand Sprint PCS either.

But she then pointed something out to me: you can ask to have your service put on "vacation" for just $5.00 a month. I guess I'm a dummy or something because I'd never heard of such a thing. She said they keep the number active--but be careful NOT to use the service while it's on vacation, because the charge is $1.00 a minute.

My Sprint PCS service is now on vacation, and $5 a month is a lot better than $150 early disconnect fee.

And I thought some of you folks might find this info helpful.

Does the $5/month "vacation" count toward your contract commitment, or just put it on hold?

MAY just prolong your contract you have to fulfill...

Like you have 6 months left...$5 per month for 6 months AINT GONNA' DO ANYTHING TO THE 6 MONTHS (just a guess)

I specifically asked that question and was told, yes, the vacation time counts toward the contract commitment. My Sprint PCS phone is taking a long vacation...

Sorry, I'm a skeptic when it comes to Sprint. I would get it in writing.

I'm a skeptic, too--which is why I recorded the conversation. If Sprint doesn't live up to it, it's a lick on 'em!

I hate sprint myself, I continuously have problems with the service.

Anyways, I've called and had them match prices, or offer something similar before and they have done it. Only downside, another contract.

Right now I'm at $45 for 1000 anytime, and unlimited nights/weekends. Good to call anywhere in the US, but I get charged if I call from another state outside of CA.

Interesting.. Is there any time limit for vacation?

I asked if there was a limit and was told no. So I put mine on vacation for the next year or so...

I too have been dissatisfied with Sprint lately. I contacted them today regarding putting my phone on "vacation" and unfortunately the time the phone spends on "vacation" does NOT count towards your commitment.
